The Supreme Court of India serves as the final court of appeal and the ultimate authority on the interpretation of the Constitution and statutes. Its jurisdiction primarily extends to appeals against orders of any court in India under Article 136, original disputes between the Union and the States or between States and the enforcement of fundamental rights under Article 32.
The Court entertains matters across constitutional and public law, civil and criminal appeals, service and commercial disputes, public interest litigation, as well as review and curative petitions. Practice before the Court is governed by the Supreme Court Rules, 2013, along with practice directions issued by the Court. Only an Advocate-on-Record (AOR) may file proceedings and is responsible for compliance with procedural requirements, filings and fees.
The AOR also coordinates between the Court, clients and other counsel, ensuring that all matters are conducted in accordance with the standards of practice and discipline expected at the highest judicial forum, with careful attention to detail and strict adherence to law and procedure.
